Shannon: Breast Cancer Survivor since 2009

A Survivor of Breast Cancer

In her late 30’s Shannon performed a self-exam after watching a morning news story about a congresswoman, also in her 30’s, who was a breast cancer survivor. Shannon found a small lump on her first breast self-exam. She was diagnosed with Braca 2 positive breast cancer and though she was not aware of a family history of breast cancer she encouraged both her sisters to be tested. They too tested positive with the Braca 2 positive gene.

Shannon believes that her early detection followed by her sisters’ had a strong positive influence on the rest of the women in her family. She is certain lives have been saved by her early detection and championing regular screenings to her friends and family. She says “Life is too short. It’s important to take care of your health, which means getting regular mammograms.”
